Someone in the forums posted a solution to this bug.. I've tested it and it
seems to work but i didn't check the differences between the Default file and
the patched one..

Manually changing the color in /etc/gdm/PreSession/Default works. Thanks dremon!
In Feisty the color is not defined there, but in Gutsy it is there hardcoded.
I'll leave this bug open, since it is not working (yet) as intended.

The desktop color is set in /etc/gdm/PreSession/Default script.
It looks like there is a problem there, but I didn't have time to find out,
just changed the #dab082 to my custom color.

I checked and I see the same behaviour als Sebastian & Ron. I selected
"black" in the GUI settings for both the desktop background & gdm, but I
still see a brownish background after loging in and before the desktop
background is shown...

selected a wallpaper and a black color. I've just checked (once again) System >
Administration > Login Windows > Local tab and it _is_ set to black. So this is
a bug and not a support question.

Actually I think it is a bug, the 'solution' you describe does not work as with
me it 'is' set to the correct color and just as the bug registerer writes it's
working fine in GDM, just the part between GDM and Gnome loading it's still the
'human' color.

Under the "Local" tab, there is a button to change your background
