unless specifically requested to do so (also, it doesn't provide any
useful data when you are booted into a mainline kernel).
Despite this, have you had a chance to review the dmesg.log?

Christopher Penalver, I did test several versions.
12.04 with nomodeset -> stop at the console with an Xorg error (no screen found)
12.04 without nomodeset -> black screen
12.10 with nomodeset -> hang in console mode
12.10 without nomodeset -> black screen
13.04 with nomodeset -> hang in console
