As many Linux apps have no smb:// support, mounting a share is necessary
to work on it.
But if an average user wants to do so, he will have to find the correct
fstab options, especially file_mode, dir_mode, correct iocharset...

As far as I know, nautilus does not allow the mounting of any shares.
In fact, it cannot browse to NFS shares or mount them. So it is not an
option.
