holding the arrow-down key
2) at 180% zoom, I count about 18 seconds to scroll from first to second page

zoom level is exactly the same for me with either Word 2013 on Windows
10 or Ubuntu Wily Writer.
Hence, could you please advise if the one of the PPAs with 5.x shows an
improvement via https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice ?

when I say very slow I mean several seconds to scroll one page. But as I
said, the slowiness depends on the size of the image.
