I've just started experiencing this issue in the last day or two. I have
no clue what I did to break a previously working Synapse. I'm crushed by
its loss. :(

Hooray! The
GTK_IM_MODULE='' synapse
worked for me too. Now if I can just figure out how to get that set
before synapse cranks itself up at login.
