Is the package indicator-application installed ? Maybe you removed it by
accident, check that.

Fernando: Is the process named indicator-application-service still
running ? If not, nm-applet will fallback to GtkStatusIcon, which is
can not be shown in Unity's indicator area.

$ nmcli con up id bunyip2

But it seems to all work ok
