It seems to me that gnome-vfs works fine (through command line and Firefox, at
least). The problems is Nautilus: it seems it doesn't sends user credentials,
but tries to connect to server as guest, ignoring the username in the uri, nor
sending the username currently logged in.
So maybe this bug
Also seeing it here on Hardy through Nautilus "network browser". thanks
for anything you can do to identify the source and fix!

No it didn't. currently I don't have that setup available, so I can't
test.
I will try late to reproduce the problem using Hardy.

sorry, I forgot to mention, that I still had this problem when browsing
the mounted samba file system (mounted in the fstab) so I dont see why
gnome-vfs would be causing it.

Thank you for the informations. Maybe somebody should open a bug on
bugzilla.gnome.org with those details, that looks like an upstream issue
and they know the code better. That would also be easier to deal with
than having somebody without a configuration to trigger the bug doing
the gateway and se

On a machine running Fedora 7 that is configured to live in the same network as
above, I can see it does different LDAP queries - mostly for "ipService" which
is probably due to /etc/nsswitch.conf configured to resolve services through
LDAP (which the Ubuntu workstation isn't configured to do -
Ok, it doesn't appear to be an SMB issue, but an LDAP issue: our local windows
network uses domain authentication over LDAP (openldap backend). when using
gnomevfs, it does some sort of LDAP lookup, and that fails. Eavesdropping with
wireshark, we can see it repeatedly query:

Try it with the IP-adress instead of the server name
