Today I found that all my apps are listed twice in the menu... I'm not
sure if that's quite the same problem, but I want to know: Bacher, what
extra bookmark entry do you speak of? I'd really like to know... thanks!

no, we use the desktop for downloads on Ubuntu, and the duplicate items
issue has been fixed in gutsy now (you might have to remove the extra
bookmark entry added by the buggy version though)

I think I found something:
In the file ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs
~/.config$ cat user-dirs.dirs
# This file is written by xdg-user-dirs-update
# If you want to change or add directories, just edit the line you're

Here you have a screenshot of my "Places" menu (In spanish is
"Lugares"), as you can see, there are two "Desktop" items (in spanish
"Escritorio"). The distro is up to date (30-Sep-07) and the user has a
clean $HOME, no .* files are in it.

If I add a new user to the system, I don't have any 'useless' entries in
the Other menu anymore. Any tips on how I can fix the current problem?
When the new user logs in, the Places menu contains duplicate entries
for: Desktop, Documents

The problem is still there, I still have a duplicate "Desktop" entry in
the Places menu and the Applications -> Other is still messed up. (at
least on my machine it is)

know. In my experience small things like this come and go quickly with
