I agree we'll need to look into this, but can we lower the priority now
that we know enabling virtualization (which most even remotely modern
CPUs have) makes it go away?

Adding ubuntu-emulator task, it's still not clear what actually prevents
the rendering. And maybe emulator should warn about missing
virtualization caps?
** Summary changed:
- unity8 display blank in emulator, host utopic, rtm-14.09 instance.
+ unity8 display blank in emulator when virtualization
this looks like something to add to developer docs

I enable virtuallization in BIOS and then it works !
We definitely need to check if visualization is properly enable before
run it.
Thanks for suggestion from Rex, I install package cpu-checker and run
command kvm-ok can show whether cpu support visualization and if it's
enable in BIOS.

Hi, Michal
The PES mainstream team identified that it has a higher probability

whole "screen" of the emulator is blank. It comes back *sometimes* if

OK, the only symptom I saw is the *dash* not being there, not the whole

I just installed fresh utopic and followed the steps, everything worked
fine here.
To clarify: you don't even get the panel / welcome screen / greeter, the
whole "screen" of the emulator is blank? Is that permanent? If you go
"sudo stop lightdm; sudo start lightdm", does it come back? How about

I patch the bug description:
- 2. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:phablet-team/tools
+ 2. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-sdk-team/ppa
I can't access the pc I produce it for now (in the office), but I
believe I add the correct ppa, or I won't have the rtm-14.09 instance
available.
** Description
yes I did , typo..

Yes, I mean vivid on the desktop/as the host, rtm/14.09 as the guest. I
suspect you meant RTM/14.09 for desktop 14.10?

When you say vivid you mean for the desktop or the emulator image.
Either way the version that we are going to support for developers is :
Desktop 14.04 + RTM/14.09 for the emulator and,
Desktop 14.10 + RTM/14.10 for the emulator.
** Changed in: unity8 (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided => Critic
Marking this as critical as we are due to start a developer program that
will require this functionality for a stable desktop release. Also
marking as confirmed since this is being verified by 3 people in the PES
team

Hey, I just tried this on vivid, and seems to work fine. On first boot
it does take a while to complete, but it does start.
There is a bug where the dash starts a little too early and unity8
misses it, that you can fix by SSHing into the emulator and going
"restart unity8-dash".
