Probably best solution would be letting the network-manager and ofono
packages conflict or preventing ofono of being installed on a desktop

I had the same problem and proceeding as in comment #6 plus a reboot
also helped me. I have a clean network menu without cryptic entries now
and mobile broadband (currently Vivo in Brazil) works reliably.

Ah, removing ofono (and manually removing /var/lib/ofono afterwards)
seems to do the trick

Chris, could you try and remove ofono? It's likely the inclusion of both
ofono (from unity8 session stuff) and modemmanager is causing an issue.

I have same problem with "Huawei E353" Mobile Broadband device.
I found this info from lsusb output:
"ID 12d1:14fe Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd."
There is no "Enable Mobile Broadband" on network applet, so I cannot
connect to Mobile network.
When trying to do new network, I cannot see my Huawei
Helpful and informative error dialog when trying to activate
