Problem solved in 14.04.1 when reverted to original kernel:
$ uname -a
Linux jjc-xps 3.13.0-44-generic #73-Ubuntu SMP Tue Dec 16 00:22:43 UTC 2014
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Problem happens when using updated kernel also in the repositories:
Linux jjc-xps 3.16.0-29-generic #39-Ubuntu SMP Tu
Same problem in Ubuntu 14.04 with a Dell XPS 13 9333. Extrangely, before
upgrading to 14.04 from the original stock 12.04 Ubuntu version shipped
with the computer, the mouse battery was reported correctly (as a
mouse).
Mouse is Dell Travel Mouse WM524
