Hi Sitsofe,
Yes, the 2D performance is better with the NV driver. I have been using
the desktop now without desktop effects (they were disabled completely).
Once I enabled them, the system feels much more responsive, so I guess
is a bug in nvidia drivers when using only 2D. When it was on 2D mode
huntermix:
Is performance (for 2D things) any better if you use the nv driver?
(Back on the nvidia driver)
What is the output of
cat /proc/cpuinfo
?
Does disabling desktop effects in System -> Preferences -> Appearance
make any difference?

This was taken from a clean gutsy install, only added the restricted driver.
Still the same issue, even when I minimize a window I can see it going down

Hi, at the moment I have the old card installed with feisty. I will install the
8600gt and get back to you. To fix the refresh rate problem I have disabled
DynamicTwinView and now it is working at 75hz but the desktop is still not very
responsive when using nvidia graphic driver.
To reproduce
huntermix:
The hz isn't actually related to the speed of your card at all (it's just the
refresh rate of your screen). Further the "incorrect" reporting of it is Bug
#92599 (also see the troubleshooting section of
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia ).
