I'll close the bug since the blank screen problem is gone. The new
problem with the gnome-panel getting the wrong screen size is reported
in another bug. It picks the screen size from a second screen, even if
there actually isn't one. You can attach the output from xrandr
--verbose to verify this.

I tried the beta. Now, the screen no longer goes blank.
Instead, I get a desktop, but the menu bars are incorrectly placed, as
if the screen were smaller than it actually is. A screenshot is at:

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Could you please add some information about your video
card to your bug report? The output of 'lspci -vvnn' would be
particularly helpful. Thanks in advance.
** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu)

There is a possible work around for your problem see Bug #144297
Could you please test the Live BETA CD.
And fill the bug report in https://iso.qa.stgraber.org/
I have also filled it. https://iso.qa.stgraber.org/qatracker/result/823/3
If it does not work.
Thanks in advance.
Gerry.
