I can confirm that this is also a problem in Kubuntu 8.10. On apt-get
install, I get an output that is similar to the one reported by
"icorbett". In addition, it appears that /etc/danted.conf isn't created.

After configuring the external: value in /etc/danted.conf as "external:
192.168.1.100" I still get the following.
-(/etc/init.d)$ sudo ./danted start

you must set the "external: x.x.x.x" value the you can start dante

I am also seeing this after upgrading to 8.10 full.

My understanding is that the issue is due to a missing configuration
value in /etc/danted.conf
(http://wiki.kartbuilding.net/index.php/Dante_Socks_Server), but I would
expect that the user would be prompted to configure the file, instead of
failing.
