I have installed the thunderbird-gnome-support package, and verified the
version as per the post above, but am still seeing the issue here with
Intrepid.
Perhaps there's something else that's changed or installed, too?

The problem seems to be fixed (from my test) in Intrepid by installing the
following two packages:
thunderbird 2.0.0.21+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.10.1
thunderbird-gnome-support 2.0.0.21+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.10.1
thunderbird-gnome-support, which was not installed with thunderbird,

thunderbird-3.0 3.0~b3~hg20090328r2299+nobinonly-0ubuntu1~umd2

I can report that the problem is still there. I use Linux Mint which is
largely based on the Ubuntu repositories

I am having the same issue, Thunderbird does not show many attachment
icons.
Please compile with the option --enable-image-
decoders=icon,png,gif,jpeg,bmp AND install the package gnome-icon-theme
when making the next Debian Package for the next version, and please

The real fix is to replace this line (line 46 on the last gutsy build) :
DEB_DH_INSTALL_ARGS_thunderbird := -Xgnome -Ximgicon -Xmozlibthai
By this one :
DEB_DH_INSTALL_ARGS_thunderbird := -Xgnome -Xmozlibthai

At last we have found how to have these icons.
You have to compile thunderbird with the option --enable-image-
decoders=icon,png,gif,jpeg,bmp AND install the package gnome-icon-theme
