so i guess i did create gratuitous noise... i'm really sorry for that!
i wasn't aware that this behaviour only affects development systems and not
stable systems.
again, sorry for the noise. i 'll try to improve my bug report/feature request
quality next time :)

just to be sure, as i am in no way a programmer:
update-manager performs an 'upgrade' by default. the dependencies and
conflicts of the individual packages currently installed, inform update-
manager if there a additional packages required or packages need to be
removed. if such case happens, then
This does not work. The dist-upgrader uses a more complex backend to
calcualte the upgrade (ensuring that there are kernel available or a
minimal system).
As mentioned before, we don't know the outcome of the dist-upgrade
before we start it.

as i understand it, update-manager also falls back to this behaviour if the
upgrade requires additional packages.
i would propose that,
° if the upgrade requires additional packages, just do it.
don't ask the user, you're in charge of upgrading the current system,
just do a 'dist-upgra

What if you want to keep a previous version (updated), for example an
LTS version like Dapper Drake which is supported with security updates
until 2009 (Server until 2011)? dist-upgrade should be an option.
