While not the ideal solution, I have reverted the kernel back to the 3.2
kernel, which is supported. I should never have moved to the 3.8 kernel,
but at the time it actually fixed a bunch of use-cases which now are
fixed by using the 14.04 boxes. Moving forward, we will not be using the
HWE kernel

Michael, you're correct and I hadn't tested on trusty hwe kernel before
posting comment #2. I am working on a solution for a supported kernel
that works with the virtualbox guest dkms package.

Keep in mind that these boxes do have the VirtualBox guest extensions
installed. The guest extensions are needed for being used with Vagrant.
If you have to revert to the precise HWE stack to make the guest
extensions work, that's fine with me.
