I have finally resolved this issue. The problem was not something in
grub2. Rather there was an issue with the BIOS. I managed to get Ubuntu
Mate 14.04 to boot - until I did did a kernel update. The PC would no
longer boot. Just on a hunch I popped out and replaced the button

The graphical capabilities in grub2 are supposedly rather sophisticated
nowadays. Graphical boot can be disabled by uncommenting
GRUB_TERMINAL=console in /etc/default/grub and running update-grub. This
is probably better for your monitor anyways.

By way of additional testing I did a clean install of Lubuntu 14.04. It
would not boot after the install. I then booted the PC from the Debian
Wheezy live DVD. I then installed grub2 from Debian to the Lubuntu hard
drive. It will now boot Lubuntu.
I did observe during the Lubutu boot process tha
