yes,i figured out dejavu sans mono must already have been installed
since the font viewer wouldnt let me install it

Hi scott. That workaround would probably work too. Though it adds files
to the system which the package manager doesn't know about, which I
guess might cause problems when trying to install or upgrade packages
which want to create or replace files in the same directory.
Also, as mentioned above, i
fixed if you copy the files from /usr/share/fonts/truetype/dejavu/*.ttf
to /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/*.ttf

As the bug watch mentioned, this issue was fixed in Debian, and the new
package has been synced to in the latest development version of Ubuntu -
Utopic Unicorn. There crawl-tiles works without any problems, so this
issue can be considered fixed.

I got the same error message when attempting to start crawl-tiles on
Ubuntu 14.04. See the attachment for complete output.
As a workaround, installing ttf-dejavu-core will place the fonts in the
directory crawl-tiles
