This bug can be closed. The latest update fixed the problem. The new
version of guidance-power-manager has sliders that adjust screen
brightness, based on whether it's on internal or external power.

If I close guidance-power-manager then the screen does not go dark, but
I don't think this is a bug in guidance-power-manager. Booting into
this kernal 2.6.20-16-generic and there is no problem.
Seems there is a problem in 2.6.22-9-generic.
