This bug is probably gone by now. In several other bug reports related
to this it was mentioned that it was a driver problem causing all the
trouble. As ar as I know, it has since been fixed, so I will mark this
this as fix released.

I have exactly same problem, after clicking on Shutdown button, system halts.
The only solution is to press ctrl+alt+backspace and reboot from gdm.
I have nvidia 7600GT and compiz enabled, i didn't make any changes in xorg.conf.

After further testing, it turns out that the problem is bigger than I
thought. First, uninstalling compiz and switching the session to GNOME
does not have any effect. I also noticed that the system halts by
logging out, restarting, shutting down, and changing to consoles (Ctrl +
Alt + F1 through F7
Well, here is my xorg.conf contents:
