I suspect you are using a non-en_US UTF8 locale, and haven't read the documentation in /usr/share/doc/scim/README.Debian.gz (yes it's a bit old, but the /SupportedUnicodeLocales part still apply to Ubuntu). The zombie process is probably due to your using im-switch (Debian bug #431294), and should
