Okay, I am closing this bug then.
The situation is not perfect, so feel free to file a wishlist bug to
make /SupportedUnicodeLocales less a pain. Or you can file a bug
against gnome-language-selector to ask it to set up scim more
automatically.

Actually, what I had done was just turn on "complex character support"
in gnome-language-selector. Maybe this should take care that the current
locale is added to scim.conf

I suspect you are using a non-en_US UTF8 locale, and haven't read the
documentation in /usr/share/doc/scim/README.Debian.gz (yes it's a bit
old, but the /SupportedUnicodeLocales part still apply to Ubuntu).
The zombie process is probably due to your using im-switch (Debian bug
#431294), and should

SCIM - input module, everything works as expected. Hmmm
