I had the same problem. Before installing nvidia-glx-new I had run dpkg-
reconfigure xserver-xorg and picked the nv driver. I was consistently
getting this error. I then logged out and then logged into console mode
and ran the same thing and the installation ran without any errors. Hope
this helps.
