Seb, this seems to me like cheese itself is simply missing a declared
dependency on gstreamer1.0-clutter. Cheese doesn't work without it, and
installing it fixes the issue.

Dependency error, gstreamer1.0-clutter has to be installed.
sudo apt-get install gstreamer1.0-clutter fixed for me. (though am not
in ubuntu, using Debain sid).

Yes cheese is working like a charm now after deleting .cache/gstreamer-1.0
