As a work-around I'm using this program:
sudo apt-get install geany
It automatically remembers my sessions without the addition of hard-to-
find packages/plugins.

There is a newer version of the plugin at
https://github.com/sphax3d/gedit-sessionsaver
It doesn't seem stabile at the time of writing (current version needs to be
patched according to Issue Tracker comments).
