Hi Jason,
CouchDB was needed for 12.04 LTS therefore I followed the steps
described at http://couchdb.apache.org/. In the download section there
is a link (named "Apache CouchDB Ubuntu Precise (12.04) packages") to
https://launchpad.net/~couchdb/+archive/stable where I installed from.

You seem to be using an unofficial backport of CouchDB 1.5.0. Where did
you install this from?
The official CouchDB 1.5.0-0ubuntu1 package in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS doesn't
have a "chdir" in its Upstart script.
