Even more info:
acpid doesn't start though it's installed. Literally:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# /etc/init.d/acpid start
* Loading ACPI modules...
[ OK ]
* Starting ACPI services...
- and nothing.
acpid is installed. Nothing in syslog

ACPI itself detects the cable correctly:
