Actually, that function was in nautilus till ubuntu 12.10 I think. I found
the most simple way to restore habitable functionality by installing Nemo
(Nautilus fork)

helpful, as it adds to the flexibility of the file manager. Maybe create

Found workaround for this issue.
Use “dconf Editor” (installed in UbuntuGnome 14.04 by default)
Org->gnome->nautilus->preference->default-folder-viewer, change it to
“list_view” from drop down list.

your tipp doesn't help. Setting the default list or Icon display for
Nautilus works and ist not the problem repoerted with this bug. The
problem is: for every induvidual folder we would like to have that
Nautilus is saving the display format. Befor 14.04 it was working in
this way. For
