Confirmed, when I comment out applesmc from /etc/modules, it is *not*
loaded on startup as expected. As such, I needed to load it manually and
restart the pommed service to get things like the keyboard backlight
working again.

I'm confused ...
Looks like applesmc is loaded at startup because I added it to /etc/modules. I
guess I did it right after my Gutsy install and totally forgot afterwards... ><
So the temporary workaround is : "echo applesmc >> /etc/modules"

I'm here at Macbook pro 15" C2D
applesmc doesn't get loaded by default, i have to do it by hand
otherwhise pommed and other things don't work correctly

I also have a MacBook Pro 15" Core2Duo (mine is from november 2006, I'm
not sure about yours).
applesmc is loaded automagically at startup (which is great).
The laptop is also very hot sometimes, it comes from the ATI GPU (Radeon X1600
Mobility), which oddly doesn't support powersaving under Linu
