I am experiencing this problem. I tried the advice above and there is
no "desktop & windows" category. I am unable to resolve this.

I am having a similar problem. Seemingly out of nowhere the desktop
switcher has dissapeared and when I minimize a window it just seems to
dissapear. Anyone found a fix short of reinstalling?

Since this happened when neither beryl or compiz was running it can't be
a compiz problem. However, it sounds like a one-time fluke. Setting to
Low.

Did you experience this after or before enabling Beryl?
Is it a consistent behaviour (ie. every time you boot the bottom panel is not
there)?
Once you boot, and the panel is not there, will the panel appear after an X
server restart (alt-ctrl-backspace)?

i dont have beryl start at start up but i do have desktop effects
enabled. i turned on beryl out of curiosity and the windows were there.
