Okay, so I took (and corrected) burlitos patch Michael linked – if
you're an Ubuntu user, and looking for an easy way to enter world 2,
download the source code (http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/smc-data),
and edit the file src/overworld/world_manager.cpp so that the function
Get_from_Path looks l
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

I can confirm this bug. It's not possible to proceed to world 2.
Addionally, the base of the top three levels on the world 1 screen turns
invisible after entering the main menu and returning to the world screen
– they can be made visible again by moving the player avatar around and
waiting one or
