Thank you for finally providing enough information for me (a new user of
mc) to enable "Lynx-like motion". This is exactly what I want and what
99% of anyone would want after discovering it.
This option should be enabled by default.

"Panel options" -> "Navigation" -> "Lynx-like motion" and see if this is
what you want. It is thoroughly described in the manual (`man mc`).

I'm sorry, I don't know what "lynx motion" is. Here's an example of what
I mean:
If focus is currently on a particular folder in mc, then hitting the
right-arrow-key would drill into that folder. Then, hitting the left-
arrow-key would go back to the parent folder.
