Same problem here while upgrading packages on a freshly installed Feisty Fawn.
The command 'fc-cache' also gave the 'failed to write cache' error on those
directories.Does the bug lie in fontconfig ?
I had to touch all the dirs in which ttf-opensymbol was trying to create the
font cache
