Right, the guy should have said it needed to be done with sudo, so
sudo update-manager -d
Did an upgrade, installed a lot of suff, rebooted, but the system still
thinks it is 13.10. Let's see how it goes.

Cannot upgrade. The update manger is set to notify me when any new release is
available. tried following

there was not a single lockup since then. As this is also CLEVO

Then install it as a virtual machine and let that run in parallel with my
