I think that this problem may have been resolved in Ubuntu 7.10
OpenOffice 2.3.0 or at least I can't seem to reproduce the issue with
the file you provided. Can you please try the updated version and let me
know if this solves your problem?

I just saved that .xls spreadsheet as a .ods file, quit, and started
ooffice on the saved file. Same result, so it's not the XLS format
itself.

Try clicking on the line or the X axis a few times.
Run top and sort on memory first, and watch that.
Be prepared to switch to another screen to kill ooffice!
