As Rainer pointed out, this could be the same as the bug I reported in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1275130 (sorry for the duplication). I
always get a segfault when trying to load a pdf as background. I fixed
the bug in my recompiled xournal copy, as specified in that bug report.

If you want to change the background pdf, a possible workaround for this
bug is to rename/move the old background file temporarily. Upon opening
the xournal file a dialogue will pop up urging the user to choose a new
background file.
