It's the installer that defaults to sda, and as you found, you just need
to switch it if that's not your boot drive.

worked on 2nd attempt: when doing manually...
grub wrongly assumed sda to be boot device. as it was a brand new hard disk
there probably was no MBR to write to, yet.
