>From looking at the ifupdown changelog I've found that it has been added

ifupdown (0.6.8ubuntu6) feisty; urgency=low
* Change DRIVERS!= to use the start/end trick, since DRIVERS!= doesn't
work. LP: #1
thanks to all who've puzzled this over. i was having trouble with my machine's
interfaces
not reconfiguring on wake from suspend, and i thought it was acpi-support, but
then
ran across bug #113755, which pointed me here. with wildthewiz' suggested change
(comment 4), all is now well with me

Lately I went out with this patch, which is far simpler:
/etc/udev/rules.d/85-ifupdown.rules
-#SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", GOTO="net_start"
+SUBSYSTEM=="net", GOTO="net_start"
by the way, this is how the script appeared in dapper.
I don't know what can be broken by removing the DRIVERS line
I was experiencing this issue with TDS Recon and Sharp Zaurus USB
networking devices. wildthewiz's patch worked good. Has anyone tried
this in Gutsy? It'd be nice if that was fixed there.
