issue. Seems that some update mentioned has solved the original issue.
Now the font changes during boot sequence from custom selected one (and
fixed in initrd) to default and then after console-setup script runs -

I think your diagnosis is mistaken. The console-setup initramfs
implementation (which I wrote) does not use setupcon, and it already
lists the console-tools initramfs hook among its prerequisites which
copies in the consolechars binary (used in place of setfont at present).
