I wrote up a solution for this a few months ago. Please try some of the
following techniques to turn off the loud/annoying PC Speaker.

I have this issue, but disabling the "System Beep" as described by
Michael Broadbent doesn't work for me. I disabled pcspkr and it removed
the beep noise for me.
I'm running 7.10 and it is up to date

Does anyone still have this problem with Ubuntu 7.10 or Ubuntu hardy? I
have pcspkr loaded and it doesn't make any sound when I try to close an
edited document. But I don't know if my system makes PC beep sounds at
all. I do have system beeps enabled in Gnome like Michael mentioned.
Thanks,
Chris
Isn't this reported upstream?

I agree the beep is VERY annoying. I also am concerned that I am unable
to set a reasonable sounding alarm. Perhaps someone knows how to use
another system sound aside from the "herd of crashing elephants." ;^)

Very annoying. Blacklisting the pc speaker module works but also
disables it in other places where I might actually want the system beep.

I get a system beep if I try to save a document with the PC Speaker
enabled (System > Preferences > Sound > System Beep > Enable System
Beep)
With System beeps disabled, I get no sound.
This is with Feisty and OOo 2.2.0-0ubuntu2

If the thing you hear is really the console beep, it's generated by
pcspkr, a kernel module ,and 'sudo rmmod pcspkr' should get rid of it.
You could even blacklist this module.

This is a point of much annoyance... It's not nice having this
humungously loud beep in class :(

This report is over a year and a half old. Is it still an issue?
