Confirmed that this is still a problem with Jaunty.
Reproduction steps:
- Install the lmodern package.
- Open a gnome application that lets you set the fonts. In this
reproduction scenario I will use Open Office.
- Set the font to LMRoman10.
- Type to notice that the font used is all caps.

The font is definitely there. If you use xfontsel you can set it.
The problem is possibly in the gnome font-config, although some people
have suggested it may be the applications' fault (I don't think this is
true, but I haven't tested it).
The bug has been kicking around for about 2 years now A
I can't find it either. In the gnome-font-properties dialog I see
LMRoman10 (small caps), LMSans10, LMSansQuotation8 , LMTypewriter10 and
LMTypewriterVarWd10.
