I'm working around the problem by opening up a console window and
running
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
but that's getting old.

Did you do anything to install the updates? I ask because you initially
mentioned 11 updates but now there are only 4. Your
/var/log/apt/history.log may be helpful here.
