I don't think the problem is solved - just changed with different
mixtures of cards and kernals.
Yesterday I upgraded to Gutsy on an old IBM Thinkpad T21.
I have a Netgear MA521 PCMCIA Wifi card, supported by the RTL8180 driver.
If I have the card plugged in during bootup using 2.6.22-14, I get a

as of kernel 2.6.22-14-generic I do not have this problem any more. and
I have been able to connect to wifi networks with the card. :)

the /var/log/kern.log file was very long and a bit confusing to me
the last 2 snapshots show the panic when booting in to console mode(the
first 2 show upstart freezing when it panics...). Is there any other
information i can provide that might help?

when using 2.6.17-10-generic lspcmcia shows the "orinoco_cs" driver.
but on the 2.6.22 kernel it shows the other driver that starts with an
"h" i think. Also note, If i boot with any of my wifi cards plugged in
i get a kernel panic!! :(

I think i am having the same problem. I am using Kubuntu(with all the
latest updates in the gusty respotoriy).I have 2 PCMCIA prism wifi
cards. on the latest kernel in gusty if either card is plugged in on
boot i get a kernel panic. they both work(well.with problems!) in
kernel 2.6.17-10
