I've just checked it on Ubuntu 8.10 (with patches upto 2009-02-03) - now
it works from Network Manager both on WIFI and Ethernet with no problem.
Exactly the same laptop as in initial request.

Hello,
I have had this exact problem. Exact scenario, except different model
laptops (Dell D600 and Dell D630) and not using static IP on either wifi
or ethernet...running 8.04
