Anyhow, the philosophy of "if you have to write a man-page something is
broken in the usability" has some merit. I want things to work without
the user having to read lots of docs as is currently the case.
About the list of supported scanners, isn't that simply the list with
SANE support?

You can write this information for the man pages and include in

Yes, I think that's what it means.
As far as improving and giving back to upstream, I'm with you on the

No, saned is not intended to be started automatically as it would block

So: /etc/default/saned should read "RUN=no"

Yes, I believe this indeed is expected. On my system scanimage -L does not
work at all from command line, but this probably will be related to the
development version of Sane I am using and the bug related to the Intel USB
chipset.
As you can see in the actions.script, you also can see scanimage h
scanimage -L indeed doesn't work, but "SANE_CONFIG_DIR=/etc/scanbd

good now.

I believe the better dependency for the package will be

version 1.4.1-3rl4.

By the way, I made two releases in the last few days for scanbd to
experimental to incorporate some of your (and my subsequent) findings.
I plan to do more since I haven't yet fully addressed your list. Those
releases are about making scanbd more robust and the OOTB experience one
of "just works"
For clarification; You are saying you can test scanbd on a Ubuntu system
but not on a Debian system? There has never been a delta for scanbd
between the Debian and Ubuntu packages.

You're welcome. When I need to test your Ubuntu package, just let me

Sander, please install the scanbd package and see if it works for you.
You can grab it from my PPA for trusty and later.
For me, it works when I start scanbd from the command line (with -f
switch to stay in the foreground). Things do not work properly yet,
when scanbd is simply sta
