The problem turned out to be with the USB 2 driver. The work around is to run
sudo modprobe -r ehci_hcd
The problem is resolved when you upgrade the kernel

I can confirm this too under Hardy. Under Gnome, the ipod shows up in
the desktop but neither rhythembox or Amarok (which is my default) show

but the drive isn't ejected, I have to manually do that to get the "Do

This has just started happening to me as well. My ipod has been mounting
fine for months from a hard drive install of Ubuntu 7.10 but now it does
not. I later discovered that my DVD and CD ROM drives don't mount
anymore either. I can manually mount the drives and ipod but they mount
in a read only
Does this happen on a clean system (or a Live CD)? Does it happen with
Hardy?

I have experienced this as well - on the latest Gutsy, plugging in an
iPod will display the "Do not disconnect" message, but the iPod won't
appear on the desktop or in rhythmbox. However, if you open Nautilus
