have not had problems with it since.

FWIV, same problem here on a MacBookPro 8.2.
Dual video cards: integrated intel and external AMD 6490M.
Booting via refind (uefi mode).
I disable on boot the AMD card and set some parameters for i915via grub config,
but still kernel 3.5.0-27 halts with blank screen. Last tested good version:

FYI. Upgrade from 12.10 to 13.04 caused my system tmp directory to become
read only and then the upgrade failed and the kernel panic ensued. More bad

The next to last set of kernels did not show up in my Software Center so
I ran the following commands in the terminal.
sudo dpkg --get-selections | grep linux
That showed me a list of stuff instal
The upstream commit has been submitted to the Ubuntu kernel team mailing
list. I expect to be spinning a new kernel for -proposed real soon now.

Update: For some reason the bug appeared again, making the screen go
black ervey reboot (tried 3 times). Re-installing the .debs (bisect01)
helped.
Helge's assumption seems to hold for my laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad S430), if "dual
VGA" means 2 different VGA lines showing up in lspci:
$ lspci |grep V
Sorry to say but i can't test the bug. My acer 3820tg is dead so, i plan
to buy another but with an integrated graphics only. Probably inteh

I have seen the very same problem on two different laptops, both with
dual VGA configs (Intel and Radeon, Intels are 8086:0106 and 8086:0166
respectively, Radeon is 1002:6840 in both cases). 3.5.0-26 works,
3.5.0-27 doesn't.

Nathanial - in general you don't need the headers, BUT - if you've
installed any drivers which build automatically using dkms (such as
nvidia proprietary drivers), you need the headers. It's safest to
install them, it "only" uses disk space.
You can uninstall them later.

As I said, the spcbisect01_amd64 kernel works fine. I tried booting it
several times and running it for a while.
There is a reference to other kernels to try but old/ subdirectory that
you mentioned does not seem to exist.

ok, I'm glad to know they work for you. Have you booted more than one
time? Some of the reports of this state that it doesn't hang every time,
so if you can do it, it's valuable to boot multiple times and also boot
after a complete power-down, to make sure that none of the hardware
devices still ho
@ Steve, just to confirm that I just installed the latest bisection
kernels (all three files as Nathaniel did). They seem to work fine, at
least the booting is smooth now, not sure if it's slower or not!

Graphics seem normal and all peripherals are available. Please let me

problem, located here:

The most recent one is in the top directory, and all older ones are in
the old/ directory.

@kristian you are absolutely right! But as log we are waiting for an
upstream fix bumblebee fixes the problem with NVIDIA and the latest
(3.5.0-27) kernel and nobody is forced to remove the latest kernel or to
change grub to boot 3.5.0-26.

Same issue with 3/5/0-27-generic with
12.10 on a DELL XPS (sub-model L702X)
Graphics config is:

I think, the solution from #61 Johnson is so far the most effective one.
Plus it's really a good idea to just revert to an older version of
kernel and wait for the ubuntu guys to fix the problem. It is really
helpful for me with a Thinkpad W530!

1. change BIOS confiuration to use in

I just updated to kernel 3.5.0-27, rebooted, and then got stuck at a
blank black screen after grub.

New kernel 3.5.0-28 appears to boot and works OK. No idea if the
graphics support is stable or not though (seems slow to me after a while
of usage -- random hiccups, etc).
