I am also having this issue on a Sager NP9170 (Clevo p170em).
Additionally I have an old 128MB SD card that I can read on this device.
Upon inserting the card, it mounts automatically.

as in #9, in the syslog "mmc0: error -110 whilst initialising SD card" appears

On 12.10 I have the same problem, the internal card-reader is not
working, external USB reader does work. Same type of laptop, ASUS K55VD.
