Thank you for reporting. I think this may be fixed in 1.4.9 which is
about to be released in Karmic. Please verify.

One obvious thing to try, of course, is to see if the bug still exists
with a different input method.

I'm not a programmer, and even if I am, without looking at the code I
won't have much insight.
But for those programmers there who may be interested in this bug, there
is a bug in GTK+ (http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=331369) that
has similar symptoms -- only one application doesn't work
reassigning to scim, the desktop team has not a lot of knowledge of what
scim does exactly and how it can be confused. Could anybody from scim
explain what the applet is doing wrongly and reassign to gnome-applets
if the bug is due to it?

Because everything else works fine with scim, just the applet does
not. You can type only English in the applet not CJK or the like.

Y
So while all other GTK/GNOME applications work fine with scim, and the
gnome dictionary applet doesn't, it's still scim's fault?
I remember seeing silmilar things in Debian (around GNOME 2.12), and I
don't use the dictionary applet anymore.
I can test, on Debian at least, if some GNOME maintainer
