Same here on Intrepid, even without the "quiet" option. Creating the
symlink helped. Kernel command line is:
root=... ro splash

Michael : I'm still unable to reproduce this bug on intrepid, however if
you think that adding usplash to rc1.d init level would make sense, can
you prepare a patch for Jaunty and subscribe sponsors for main so your
patch gets discussed? You could also discuss of that potential change
with ubuntu d
This bug can be fixed by simply symbolic-link "../init.d/usplash" to
"/etc/rc1.d/S89usplash"

I can reproduce it on intrepid.
Type in 'init 1' in konsole, usplash comes up and it doesn't recover the
screen but I can hit enter to bring back to kdm. After that, when I
return to console, the screen becomes messy.

This bug seems to be fixed for me on a fully upgraded Kubuntu 7.10
system - I can now shut down and go into runlevel 1 from a virtual
console.

Thanks for your bug report. This bug seems to be fixed in latest hardy
alpha 6 release (at least for me). Can you confirm if you can reproduce
this bug in Gutsy / Hardy?
